The R.M. of Hanover completes annual sewer cleaning in communities where sewer service is available. This important maintenance work ensures the system is working efficiently, helps detect any problems, and assists with infrastructure planning. Program information is communicated to residents prior to commencement of work.
Information for Residents During Sewer Cleaning and Inspection
Occasionally during the cleaning and inspection process, air pressure in the sewer can cause water to splash out of your toilets, sinks and drains. Please take the following precautions to prevent water damage in your home:
- Close lids and cover toilet bowls when not in use
- Insert drain plugs in all sinks and bathtubs when not in use
- Remove all floor mats in bathrooms
- Place an old towel around the base of toilets
- Cover all basement floor drains
Once equipment has moved off your block, it is safe to return things back to normal.
Odors
Sometimes the sewer cleaning and inspection leaves an odor in the home. If so, run some water down all sink and bathtub drains, flush toilets, pour a pail of water into each basement floor drain and open your windows. After a short time the odor should disappear. If the issue persists or if residents have any concerns please contact the Engineering and Utilities Department.
